I tell you some secrets, beliefs and thoughts from my experience.

First, what is improvisation?: doing a thing without having it planned or prepared, but more previous knowledge we have, improvisation is going to be more pleasant and creative. Whatever area you perform.

In today’s article I leave you tips and tricks to get along with improvisation and enjoy it to the fullest.

At 6 years old, I had my first approach with dance: classical dance, leaving aside that one dances from an early age is something natural, but academically speaking. At that time, «improvising» was not heard much, especially in ballet. On the contrary, it was a fairly structured dance (with a lot of technique), (then, over time it evolved). Afterwards, I started contemporary dance, and discovered a more relaxed dance style (with another method), although the classes were still guided by choreography. For me, improvising wasn’t a positive thing; I felt that improvised things were careless, disorganized and even reluctant.

As tango came into my life, my perception of improvisation completely changed, and suddenly, it seemed to me the most valuable thing about dancing: being able to continue with codes and marks in the hug, dancing and coordinating my legs with those of my partner, and most importantly, not to clash! (different Technique and with a hug).

That challenge only intrigued me: not knowing what’s coming, but still being prepared to respond. Every tango was different, an ephemeral moment, and that satisfaction that everything went well after the uncertainty of improvisation, is magical and unique.

Obviously, this does not always happen: the role that touches us as followers is very difficult, because we are all the time waiting for a signal to start, and that, sometimes, can generate anxiety. Developing calm for these situations is key, as everything goes better. It is a couple’s dance this does not mean that one role is more important than the other, each has its challenge.

Tango has a lot of technique and choreography as a learning strategy. Still, we are no longer alone and all this applies to improvisation, something I learned later, since in my beginnings I studied through tango show. Immediately I was also passionate about tango salon back in 95. It was at the same time, working on the technique with differences and similarities a challenge and pleasure.

We can also practice and improvise alone, to experiment and enhance creativity, to familiarize the movements in our body and then be more confident with each other and stop in that embrace.

When you feel like you don’t think technically and just get carried away, it’s magical as I always say. Be patient, tango is like wine, longer, tastier.

My first photo and dance improvising in public – Year 95, you can see my family in the front row. A lot of emotion.

Eloy Prim and Analía Centurión

As I know that sometimes, and more than anything at first, it is difficult to get confident with this improvisation, I leave you my best tips for a fluid and enjoyable improvisation.

It’s so pleasurable when improvisation flows unhindered, between music and hug, isn’t it? In the same way, we have to try to provoke that feeling in our partner, and for that, there is nothing better than practicing our dance, so that, when the hug comes, we can show all our talent.

Now, tips to add to our milonguera improvisation:

1 – I recommend not chatting too much while you’re millenging: the language of that moment is different, and talking only with our body will make us more connected and focused. I, for example, get distracted if they talk to me he. If they talk to me they don’t respond, maybe later I explain that I deconcentrate myself. It will be your experience.

2- The ideal time to talk is between tango and tango, batch and batch. That’s when you can take the opportunity to uncontract, to have a little more confidence with the leader. If he doesn’t talk to you, dare to break the ice so as not to make that bump of silence between tango and tango an uncomfortable moment.

3- When the shootout is over, do not run away to sit down: wait a few seconds after the «chan chan» in the hug, and go slowly to sit down. I allowed the «stela» of the batch to continue resonating in your body, and if the leader accompanies you to your seat, that moment would be complete.

4- Always remember that every improvisation is different, every leader dances differently, and in every milonga there are different stories. Don’t think you’re going to live the same at every party, get used to the changes and flow with them.

5- Each batch is handmade and spontaneous: there is no one equal to the other, and that is the great challenge: to feel and make the other person feel a magical and unrepeatable event. If this happens, you’re going to remember that batch forever. I have some batches in my heart and memory that will not be repeated, and that I will never forget.

6- We are not alone improvising with our partner; there are also other couples hugging nearby that surround us, and we must perceive the other improvisations, to manage to live together on a large track and enjoy a very social party.

PS 1: Welcome! Your conscious improvisation is already on the way, controlling the technical also helps you enjoy this popular dance.

My first experiences improvising in MILONGAS of BUENOS AIRES – CAPITAL. «NEW SALÓN LA ARGENTINA,» dancing with the Dárienzo Soloists – 1997

T

There is no age that limits the ability to enjoy this dance.

When I still didn’t dance tango there were already these tango phenomena (Video 1995) that you enjoy.
