The most wanted ornament for tango dancing
Dear tanguera,
Today I want to talk to you about something that I know fascinates you as much as it does me: the adornments in tango. This topic mobilizes many tangueras, since we all want to be creative, add that special touch to our dance, and stand out on the dance floor. I find it very interesting to reflect on «the most sought after adornment».
What is your most wanted adornment?
Have you ever wondered what is your favorite ornament, the one that everyone does, or the one that no other tanguera does, or maybe one that makes you feel special and satisfied? Are you looking for an ornament to embellish your dance, to feel unique, or to achieve something that no one else does? Or maybe you want to master a popular embellishment so you don’t fall out of fashion?
For what and for whom do we embellish?
It’s important to ask ourselves, for what and for whom do we seek special ornaments? Sometimes, we look for embellishments to feel accepted, to elevate our dancing or just to have fun and not be bored. Other times, we want that one ornament that everyone else does, so we don’t feel out of place. Are you looking for a different ornament to stand out, or a popular one to fit in?
The importance of authenticity
As a teacher and coach, I have observed that many times we are attracted to an embellishment because of its complexity or visuals, rather than how it feels to dance. It is critical to remember that an embellishment must embellish our dance without hindering the connection to the music and to our partner. First, it must connect with you. Practice moves and put them to the music to see if they really work and if they feel authentic. If they feel stuck it is because they are not ready yet.
Be critical and realistic
Testing and experimenting is key, but so is being critical and realistic. It’s not about filling in spaces with robotic or stereotypical movements. Embellishment should flow naturally into your style and way of being. An embellishment that works for one dancer may not flatter you, and that’s okay. The search is personal and unique.
Finding your most sought after ornament
So what is your most sought after adornment – the one that makes you feel accepted, the one that elevates your level, or just the one that you enjoy and connects you more to tango? It’s crucial to have options and choose embellishments that benefit you and further your dance.
I would love to know what is your most sought after adornment, the one that makes you feel more accepted or the one that makes you feel empowered?
