Milonguera: tips para controlar mejor las pausas. (English below)

PD2: ¡A practicar pausas!

Tanguera: tips to better control the pauses.
When I started dancing the tango, all the milonguero teachers talked about the pause; finding out where it was, what was the best moment, or how to control it was challenging. The reality is that it takes years and years to discover it, and even today I am still investigating it; the secret is that the leader is going to transmit that pause, that sigh, and we have to know how to listen to it and respond to it so that the magic happens.
Therefore, in this article, I want to give you some tips and advice so you can learn to control more quickly. And stay until the end, there’s a video surprise!
Did you realize that the pause is one of the most beautiful moments when you are milongaando? It’s a slow-motion feeling.
At the time, milongueros and teachers didn’t give you many details about it. They would tell you “Don’t hurry, don’t get ahead of yourself, don’t speed up; dance slower because in the pause is the enjoyment”. But of course, I didn’t know how to control that moment.
As the years went by, I discovered more details in my dance, and learning to join more calmly was and is one of my most valuable treasures; I could start to control more that movement that was so difficult for me, that sigh, that pause.
In a tango, there are different moments: fast, slow, marked, fluid… It all depends on what the leader tells you. The more you know yourself and control your walk, the better you will feel in the embrace, with the music… And you will be able to enjoy that pause when the time comes because you will already be prepared.
Now, do you know what the most important pause is?
One of the most important pauses is the look; that moment of suspense in which you accept to dance. Although nowadays many times this crossing of glances does not happen because they are next to you or they come to your table, or they are looking at someone else, or are simply distracted, that instant of coincidence is magical; everything depends on the place and the moment, but you cannot miss this pause of crossing the glance, since it is there where the collaboration begins.
Music has many pauses; if the music is fast, our partner can also create pauses and stop in the embrace until he starts again in a phrase or a word of the singer…
There is a lot to listen to and pay attention to: instruments, singers, silences, and different orchestras, and thank goodness, otherwise, the dance will become boring and repetitive.
.
Pauses help to make improvisation and movement on the track together more controlled and less chaotic. A good pause at the right moment can generate more pleasure than a fast part or sequences with hooks, but if you anticipate the next move, the leader can’t slow you down, he will have to follow you and the avalanche will not stop…
There are pauses all the time: in the walk, in the join, in a pivot… The more you discover and practice your details, the better you will feel when dancing.
You will be able to give yourself the freedom to stop that movement if the music, the space, the lyrics, or the feeling indicate it, and then step on the strong beats depending on the proposal. The pause is a movement that slows down; I feel there are 2 types of pauses:
●A pause at the top of the body and a pause following the movement.
●A pause where down below you don’t move and up above you do.
The pause is not staying static, immobile; it is a moment of suspension, of sighing.
Breathing also helps this moment. A good pause when interpreting a word of the tango lyrics will be fantastic; sometimes the leader does not move and the milonguera follows that movement; other times the leader makes movements while the woman stops him.
The pauses give contrast, color, and distinction to your dance. It is difficult to control this moment; it is not something magical, it does not fall from the sky; but that is how it feels when we manage to interpret it.
Pepito Avellaneda (a master of masters and a true milonguero) used to say that dancing slowly was very difficult, that is why most people like to dance more marked and rhythmic tangos, those where the movements are repeated without haste and pause, always the same sequence by heart.
Slow dancing is not for everyone; balance is the key. A slow tango cannot be danced all in a row, because it does not transmit anything.
PS1: Focus also on discovering your pause. Mine, for example, is the first moment in the embrace, and the end of the tango, when that intimate feeling remains between the couple.
PS2: Practice your pauses!PS3: here’s the surprise: practical videos to control pauses during walks.
